A 47-year-old man has died following an accident this morning on the turnpike.

The man was the driver of a car that collided with a semi about 8:50 a.m. The accident occurred near mile marker 147 in the eastbound lanes, which is east of Abbe Road in North Ridgeville.

The man’s identity is not immediately available. De la Porte could only say that his car has Ohio plates.

The man, who suffered “massive, massive injuries,” according to de la Porte, died while being taken by ambulance to St. John Medical Center in Westlake. Due to weather conditions, MetroHealth Medical Center’s LifeFlight was unable to fly.

The driver of the semi was uninjured, de la Porte said. The turnpike’s eastbound lanes were shut down for a time while crews responded.

Elyria and North Ridgeville have an agreement in which Elyria firefighters respond to eastbound turnpike calls and North Ridgeville firefighters respond to westbound turnpike calls between the two cities, de la Porte explained. The agreement was worked out several years ago after a North Ridgeville firetruck collided with a semi while trying to turn around on the turnpike.
